Carmela Conroy is a third-generation Eastern Washingtonian, raised in a working-class Union family in the Spokane Valley. A graduate of Central Valley High School, she put herself through school at the University of Washington, earning a B.A. in international trade and investment and a J.D. Before her public service career, she worked jobs ranging from fast food and child care to teaching English in Japan. Carmela began her career in public service as a Spokane County deputy prosecuting attorney, holding accountable violent offenders. She then spent 24 years as a U.S. Foreign Service officer, with postings in Afghanistan, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, and Pakistan. As U.S. Consul General in Lahore from 2009 to 2011, she was the senior American diplomat in Pakistan’s Punjab province through terrorist attacks and a major diplomatic crisis. In 2011, she received the CIA’s Agency Seal Award for her work. After returning home, Carmela chaired the Spokane County Democratic Party from 2022 to 2024, resigning to run for Congress. Carmela’s campaign is powered by people, not corporations. She is running to lower costs for families, end the tariffs hurting Eastern Washington farmers, protect Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid, getting dark money out of politics, and restoring America’s standing in the world.
