Foreign Policy for America Endorses Cal Cunningham (NC) for Election

U.S. Army veteran endorsed by nonpartisan Foreign Policy for America Action Network

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - February 25, 2020

WASHINGTON D.C. - Foreign Policy for America Action Network announced today its endorsement of Cal Cunningham for election. As an Army veteran of Iraq and Afghanistan, a former state legislator, and a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, Cunningham is running to represent the people of North Carolina in the U.S. Senate.

“The first thing you realize about Cal is that his commitment to serving our country shines through in everything he does,” said Andrew Albertson, treasurer of Foreign Policy for America Action Network. “It came through when he signed up to serve in the U.S. Army, when he worked to root out corruption overseas, and when he spoke out against the mindless idea of robbing our military construction funds to pay for Trump’s ridiculous wall. We know Cal will be a voice for common sense national security policy and for deploying our diplomatic and economic might as tools of first resort – rather than sending American troops to fight another unnecessary war. That’s why we plan to do everything we can to help him win.”

“I’m honored to earn Foreign Policy for America’s endorsement,” said Cunningham. “As a member of the U.S. Army Reserve, I understand the consequences that a reckless foreign policy can have on our servicemembers and their families. I’m running to be North Carolina’s next United States Senator to ensure the safety of this nation with smart diplomacy and a forward-thinking foreign policy strategy.”

At just 27 Cunningham served as one of North Carolina’s youngest State Senators, where he fought for a strong education system, clean air legislation, land preservation, and campaign finance reform. After the attacks on September 11, 2001, he joined the U.S. Army Reserve and has served three active duty tours, including in Iraq and Afghanistan. He was awarded the Bronze Star and the General Douglas MacArthur Leadership Award, in part for his work tackling corruption, waste, fraud, and abuse by civilian and military contractors. He currently holds the rank of Major and still trains special operations forces at Fort Bragg, while also running his own business. If elected, Cunningham hopes to serve on the Armed Services, Veterans’ Affairs, or Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committees, and as a critic of family separation, border wall funding, and other inhumane border policies, promises to be an advocate for immigration reform.

Cunningham joins incumbent Senator Jeanne Shaheen, running for re-election in New Hampshire, as Foreign Policy for America’s second Senate endorsement. In the House, Foreign Policy for America has also endorsed Rep. Colin Allred (TX-32), Rep. Gil Cisneros (CA-39), Rep. Jason Crow (CO-06), Rep. Chrissy Houlahan (PA-06), Rep. Andy Kim (NJ-03), Rep. Tom Malinowski (NJ-07), Rep. Max Rose (NY-11), Rep. Mikie Sherrill (NJ-11), Rep. Elissa Slotkin (MI-08), Rep. Xochitl Torres Small (NM-02), Rep. Abigail Spanberger (VA-07), and Rep. Lauren Underwood (IL-14), as well as challengers Dan Feehan (MN-01), Sri Kulkarni (TX-22), and Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23).
