Former CDC Global HIV and TB Division Director endorsed by
nonpartisan Foreign Policy for America Action Network
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Washington, D.C. – June 18) The Foreign Policy for America Action Network has endorsed Dr. Shannon Hader for the race in Washington’s 8th Congressional district, the political action committee announced today.
“Dr. Shannon Hader is an incredibly inspiring public servant,” said Andrew Albertson, Executive Director of Foreign Policy for America, “As a doctor, she could have done anything, but she chose to devote her career to stopping the spread of infectious diseases and keeping Americans safe. We need Members of Congress with that kind of dedication and experience to get our country back on track. That’s why we’re so excited to support Shannon for Congress.”
“I’ve spent a good portion of my career working with our Ambassadors and career diplomats from the Department of State, and I’ve seen how critical they are to keeping us safe here at home,” Hader said, “I know that when America’s foreign policy is thoughtful and credible, and when we lead at global tables on issues that affect us—the environment, health security, new markets—our communities are stronger, smarter, wealthier, and wiser. To be recognized and endorsed by FP4A as someone who can be a voice for strong U.S. leadership on global issues is an honor.”
Hader served in the Commissioned Corps of the U.S. Public Health Service as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Officer at the Centers for Diseases Control and Prevention (CDC), and later as the senior scientific advisor to the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). From 2007 to 2010, she was the Director of the District of Columbia Department of Health’s Director of the HIV/AIDS, Hepatitis, STD, and TB Administration, where she turned around an agency beset with financial and directional difficulties. After four years as Vice President and Director for the Center for Health Systems and Solutions at the Futures Group, Hader returned to the CDC in October 2014. There she served as the Director of the Global HIV & TB Division, where she was responsible for an annual budget of approximately $2.4 billion that contributed to the 2.2 million babies worldwide born HIV-free under PEPFAR.
Hader joins Lauren Baer (FL-18), Rep. Salud Carbajal (CA-24), Jason Crow (CO-6), Rufus Gifford (MA-3), Ken Harbaugh (OH-7), Andy Kim (NJ-3), Tom Malinowski (NJ-7), Amy McGrath (KY-6), Gina Ortiz Jones (TX-23), Rep. Jacky Rosen (NV), Elissa Slotkin (MI-8), and Nancy Soderberg (FL-6) as candidates for Congress endorsed by the Foreign Policy for America Action Network in the 2018 election cycle.
